HThe history of the Palace of Culture and Science, and the surrounding area, has been the subject of fierce debate for many years.
What is the role of this building and the space around it in a dynamically developing and built-up city center? This short film from 1992 features a lot of interesting footage, documenting the ideas submitted for a competition to develop the heart of Warsaw’s city center, aimed at solving the problem of the ‘repulsive emptiness of Defilady Square’. It also includes statements from architects, urban planners, and ordinary citizens about this part of the city. Today, the square is transforming, not only due to the major ongoing reconstruction but also through activist actions and interventions aimed at reducing the dominance of concrete there. It will be particularly interesting to trace the emotions and sentiments surrounding this space in the 1990s in the context of how we feel about it today.
