Kadr z filmu

In the capital of Saxony, we have been observing growing nationalist sentiments for years, and the newly rebuilt space has become a backdrop for them, as well as a point of reference for ideas promoted by right-wing circles. In recent years, Dresden has undergone an impressive reconstruction of its historic center, which has restored its former, pre-war character. It is no coincidence that PEGIDA marches, now giving way to demonstrations by the AfD party (which leads in the polls in this state), take place in the AltStadt area, carrying banners calling for the restoration of the old Dresden – not only in terms of social structure, but also in terms of the historicizing styles of newly constructed buildings.

What we could see in Hans Christian Post's film just a few years ago is now increasingly evident in Polish politics. Anti-modernist rhetoric is clearly linked to conservative circles, and the expression of a longing for reconstruction and the erection of new buildings in the spirit of historical regional styles entails nationalist narratives about restoring the “true” identity of cities. This is especially true for those cities which, according to some, have become too Europeanized in recent years.

In this documentary, we follow how the authorities' decisions regarding the shaping of public space can influence social moods. The film's director notes the links between conservative historical politics and the development of neo-nationalism in Germany.
